My grandfather was fascinated with locomotives (and photography!). Trains are massive and contain a myriad of moving parts. Compositionally speaking, there are more interesting "smaller" images beyond the giant machine on tracks. I love the sense of balance in this image. The oil spills and steam also add a layer of tension and life to an otherwise static image. These perfect imperfections strengthen the industrial era mystique and remind us that while craftsman created these machines that may fill museums, they served a practical transportation utility in their day.
