Cobblestones on St. Peter's square
Surrounding the large obelisk in the center, an array of cobblestones caught my eye. The imperfections, coatings, and irregularities in their pattern simply suggest age. While this section appears random, the paving actually contains radiating lines in the travertine. In 1817 circular stones were placed to mark the shadow of the large obelisk as a working sundial.
There are a several paver patterns in St. Peter's square. I noticed Piazzas (town square or focal point of the city) in other cities used these distinct patterns.
