Via Appia
The Roman road began in 312 BC near this site as a project of Appius Claudius. Initially used for strategic purposes of the Roman army, the road eventually reached Brindisi, a port city 350 miles away. On top of mortar and small stones, interlocking stones were carefully fitted together. Our guide pointed out the chariot groove marks seen on several of these stones.
If only our roads lasted this long, we'd have no use for orange barrels...
