Colonnade of Saint Peter’s Square
Alexander VII challenged Gian Lorenzo Bernini to design the piazza in front of the cathedral. In what proved to be a difficult and expensive project, Bernini exceeded expectations in creating a space for both worshipers and visitors.
I love the texture of the columns. The design of the light fixture becomes the subject of this image against a sea of columns.
Bernini completed construction in 1667. I'm curious if he designed these ornate lighting fixtures, or if they were added later.
